Rooftop Coffee Roasters is a family owned-and-operated business nestled in the beautiful mountain town of Fernie, BC. Rooftop got its start back when co-founder Keegan Street began experimenting with roasting coffee at 16 years old. To avoid smoking up the house, those first home roasts took place up on the rooftop patio of the family home, hence the name! In June 2016, the family took the leap and opened up a commercial roastery, with the goal of bringing lighter-roasted coffee with a focus on transparency and traceability to BC’s Interior. After roasting in a few different locations over the years, Rooftop has found their way back to their roots as their roastery-café now operates in that same building in downtown Fernie, below the rooftop where it all began. Through their café, they aim to create a culture that is approachable and inviting and share their love of coffee with the people of the Kootenays. Beyond Fernie, their coffee has been served alongside the world’s most notable roasters in cafes from Vancouver to New York. Rooftop sources their coffee with equity and intention in mind, seeking to purchase from the same producers year after year and ensuring their buying practices translate to equitable prices and dependable commitments. Co-founder Keegan Street is actually completing a degree in Environmental Engineering with a focus on agrology and regenerative agriculture, with the aim of conducting research and integrating techniques to make coffee farms more resilient and sustainable.
They’ve come a long way since those early days on the roof but cracking a fresh bag of green coffee still inspires the same wonder and excitement – who knows where it will take them next!
